Have you ever thought the Church only employs priests and cantors?
In reality, a wide variety of professionals work in parishes and the Church's administrative bodies. These include IT specialists, property managers, financial officers, youth workers, chefs, communications experts, project coordinators, and many others. While many people are employed in roles that directly support the Church’s core spiritual mission, parishes, parish unions, and the Church Council also carry out a wide range of other activities beyond worship services—such as clubs, family counseling, and facility rentals. Like any organization, they also require administrative support to operate effectively.

What Is It Like to Work for the Church?
Not all positions within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland require church membership. Membership is generally required only for spiritual roles and official church appointments. There is also no expectation that employees must live or think in a deeply religious way—people from all backgrounds are welcome to work in parishes. Many Church employees say that one of the most rewarding aspects of their work is the opportunity to collaborate with people from diverse professions and walks of life.
The Church and its parishes are, in general, stable and responsible employers offering varied and meaningful hands-on roles. Church employers are committed to staff well-being and professional development, just as they care for the parish community as a whole. Salaries are based on the collective agreement for Church employees, known as KirVESTES.

Opportunities for Young People and Students
Parishes offer summer jobs each year across the country, including for those under the age of 18. Summer workers are hired as church guides, camp counselors, and for cemetery maintenance, among other tasks. Longer seasonal positions are also available at cemeteries and retreat centers from spring through autumn. Most summer and seasonal jobs are open for applications between January and March.
Parishes, parish unions, and the Church Council also offer internship opportunities for students in both theological and administrative fields.
