Nordic IN seeks a Secretary General to lead its Secretariat and represent one million Nordic industrial workers. Play a key role in Nordic cooperation, advocacy, and international trade union affairs.

The Nordic industrial workers’ federation, Nordic IN, is seeking a new Secretary General.

The General Secretary heads the Nordic IN Secretariat and is responsible for implementing the decisions made by the political leadership of Nordic IN. The role therefore largely involves political advocacy and stakeholder engagement with European, Nordic, and global actors.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a candidate who has:

  1. Experience and knowledge of the Nordic labour market model and the Nordic trade union movement
  2. Experience with European public affairs and advocacy work in Brussels
  3. Experience in lobbying and engaging with decision-makers
  4. Experience working within the international (preferably European) trade union movement
  5. Fluency in English and at least one other Nordic language (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or Finnish) as well as good communication skills both orally and in writing

Key Competences

The member organizations of Nordic IN share many common characteristics, but they also differ significantly, as do the political and trade union cultures across the Nordic countries. You must therefore be able to balance different interests and collaborate effectively to ensure that all organizations feel included in the work.

Familiarity with key aspects of trade union culture in the Nordic countries will be considered an advantage.

At Nordic IN meetings, we aim to use Nordic as the working language. Knowledge of and experience with working across more than one Nordic language is therefore beneficial. However, in most of the remaining work, excellent English skills — both written and spoken —is essential.

About Nordic IN

Nordic IN consists of 20 affiliated unions representing industrial workers across the Nordic countries, together representing approximately one million industrial workers. With the high level of organization in the Nordic countries this makes Nordic IN one of the strongest regional actors in the European and global industrial trade union network.

The organization is politically governed by the Executive Committee, in which all member unions are represented, and which meets twice a year. Every second year, a Nordic Forum is held, where elections for the leadership positions in Nordic IN take place.

The day-to-day operations are managed by the Nordic IN Secretariat, which consists of the General Secretary, two Nordic Officers, and an Office Manager, working in close cooperation with the member organizations. The Secretariat is located in Stockholm, and the position involves a significant amount of travel.

Leadership Responsibilities

As General Secretary, you will act as the point of reference for the Secretariat staff. You should therefore be motivated to set direction and goals for the daily work and to serve as a professional sparring partner for the Secretariat employees.

The position can be applied for until 23 August 2026 at: [email protected]. Please mark the application “Nordic IN General Secretary”. Applications must be sent in English.
