Holiday pay and bonus

Typically, the amount paid to your account during your annual holiday consists of holiday pay and often also a holiday bonus. The payment date depends on the workplace and collective agreement, but the amount is always at least equal to your average monthly income

Holiday bonus is not the same as holiday pay or holiday compensation

The holiday bonus should not be confused with holiday pay or compensation, as the two are based on law whereas holiday bonus is a negotiated benefit. Holiday pay refers to the regular salary, which is paid during holiday season. Holiday compensation refers to compensation paid at the end of the employment relationship. The holiday compensation compensates for unused holiday days.

Exchanging Holiday Bonus Pay for Time Off – What Should Be Agreed Upon?

Exchanging holiday bonus pay for additional time off can give employees more free time instead of receiving the bonus as a cash payment. While some collective agreements may contain industry-specific provisions on this matter, the general principle is that any exchange of holiday bonus pay for leave should be agreed upon between the employer and the employee.

A common recommendation is for the employer and the employee representative (shop steward) to first establish shared ground rules through a framework agreement. Once these principles are in place, individual employees can choose to exchange their holiday bonus pay for time off in accordance with the agreed terms.

The agreement should specify at least the following:

  • What proportion of the holiday bonus pay will be converted into time off.

  • The conversion rate (for example, whether one week’s holiday bonus corresponds to five or six days of leave).

  • How the leave can be taken and the maximum or minimum length of leave periods.

  • How the timing of the leave will be agreed upon and who makes the final decision if no mutual agreement is reached.

  • The deadline by which the leave must be used.

  • How situations will be handled if the employee becomes ill before or during the leave period.

A clear written agreement helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that holiday bonus leave can be used in a predictable and practical manner for both the employer and the employee.
