President Antti Rinne expresses on behalf of the trade union Pro condolences for the political terrorist act that has shocked Norway and people all around the world.

Rinne is adamant that people must not bow down to violent deeds. We must continue the work for social development, based on freedom, mutual responsibility and equality, he insists.

Read the president of the trade union Pro, Antti Rinne’s message of condolence in full:

On Friday afternoon shocking news began to emerge from Oslo, the capital of Norway. First there were reports of a deadly bomb attack, which struck at the heart of decision-making in a democratic society. Within a few hours the shock deepened when the news began to unfold that a second, and as it turned out related, tragedy was taking place - an attack by a gunman at the summer camp of the youth organization of Norway's labour party.

On Saturday disbelief, anger, anxiety and feelings of overwhelming shock mounted, as it became clear how cold-bloodedly and systematically this young extreme-right Norwegian man had acted in seeking to damage Norway and Norwegians. He targeted a country that can be proud of developing a society based on equality, freedom and tolerance and that plays a responsible role in relieving distress of people living in other countries.

One must not bow down to this kind of sick and obscene violence. The work in the name of freedom, brotherhood and equality must go on in Norway and in other parts of the world.

On behalf of myself and the trade union Pro, I express my deepest condolences for the immense grief of all Norwegians.

Antti Rinne
